Trees at Lake Herbert

by Basil Greber

Hi all

This view of trees at the shore of Lake Herbert in Banff National Park immediately appealed to me. So I tried to capture the essence of why I liked what I saw - this is the best composition I got, I think.

Techs: Nikon D90, 70-300 VR, handheld.

Does it work? All comments welcome!

There are possibilities in this image, but the tree in front is a little two in your face and my eye has a hard time going past it to the rest of the image.

The layered OOF parts create a very arty look. This technique works especially well wit this subject.

I like these shots with vivid lines formed by trunks. The OOF background helps; if it were in focus it would be too busy.

This is quite interesting, Basil. I have looked at it a few times now and it is really starting to appeal to me. Now I'm enjoying what you did here with the focus and enjoy the overall feel this has.

The larger version definitely is better, but I'm having a hard time with the focused tree. There isn't enough separation between it and the OOF trees directly behind it (especially on the RH part of the tree) so my eye gets stuck trying to separate them. This DOF could work if you had repositioned slightly to the left.

I like the vertical lines and the soft bg. I'm on the fence about the limited dof, but you certainly have an interesting composition.

A fine looking scene, Basil. I enjoy these type images and have tried a few myself. Not sure what type of trees these are, but they make a nice subject too.
