Burrowing Owl

This juvenile is (obviously) about to land on the sagebrush. Upper background is the Great Salt Lake.

I saved four images of this owl landing but all of them were relatively tight horizontally and needed rotation. This one gave me the most room on the sides after rotating. I'd like to have had more DOF but there wasn't much light for flight shots.

7D, 1/1600, f/6.3, ISO 640, 500 f/4, shot from pickup window on 7/12/12, cropped to 77% of original image, exposure adjustment in ACR, rotation, sharpened bird, no additional processing or adjustments, natural light, no bait, no decoy, not set up or called in

Geez, Ron. That's awfully nice. I like the one eyed peek that you're getting. Pretty incredible to get one in flight coming at you and still to get everything so sharp. :toast:

Wonderful shot Ron, as usual I should add  - like the pose and the warm colors in this image. Interesting to see the feathers on it's back wing looking kind of worn .. Great image, Cheers, Hans

Really nice Ron. Love the position of the bird and the warm light. Nice overall comp. The room on the sides is fine with me.

Ron: This is REALLY nice. The one eye that is visible really adds to the overall shot. Great pose and that background is perfect! Extremely nice image.

Terrific as presented. What's not to like in this excellent and unusual flight shot?

Wonderful variety of colors to this shot, I like the straight on flight pose, eye contact and the one claw spread open. The layered background really compliments the image as well, way to go Ron.

The outstretched, sharp talons make this shot for me Ron, well done. :toast:

You really captured a dynamic pose with the horizontal wing spread and outstretched talons, the pre-landing stance, but could also be interpreted as about to attack its prey. Very nice colors from the lake and the more subtle greens and browns in the brush and owl. I saw my first burrowing owls this summer in southern Saskatchewan. I thought I might get some photos of them close up, no way, couldn't get within 200 yards! They were faster fliers than I anticipated as well, so I have an even greater appreciation for how special a photo like this is with all the elements in place. :toast:

It doesn't look he has chosen a very stable landing spot. Great look at that bright eye, nice wing position and talons.

Sweet One Ron!!!
