Away We Go

Hey Guys,

Another shot from my recent Serengeti research trip. As we were heading back to the tents at night I snapped a shot of this Giraffe- bathed in the warm light of the sinking sun, and walking away towards the beautiful clouds. Although its probably not one of my personal favorites from the trip, I thought it was a fitting shot, as I've left Tanzania and am exploring Kenya now.

Subject: Masai Giraffe (Giraffa camelopardalis tippelskirchi) walking into a sunset
Location: Serengeti National Park, Northern Tanzania
Camera: Canon 7D
Lens: Canon EF 500mm f/4 IS - shot on pillow from sunroof of Land Cruiser. IS on in mode 1.
Exposure: 1/400ss @ f/5; ISO 1000.
Crop: Full frame

Hope you like the shot- I love any critiques you may have!

-Cam

I like the soft evening light and seeing the bird on the back of the giraffe really adds to the image for me. I just wish for a slight head turn or something to see the face / eyes of the giraffe. Sounds like you are on a very interesting research trip, way to cool.

Nice soft colors Cam. Why is it they never seem to cooperate and give you a nice portrait? Thanks for sharing. Sounds like a great trip.

Hi Cam,

Between you and Charlie this must be the week for butt shots!

I quite like this. I think it's mostly the soft light and mood that contribute to the overall feeling of the image. I'm fine with the giraffe heading out of the frame and "moving on" - I'm not finding myself wishing for a head turn. Colours are great and I quite like the lighting balance (between foreground, subject, and the sky) - good job on the processing. Bird on the back adds a little visual interest but for me it isn't a critical part of the shot (and has little impact on how this shot works for me). Well done...

Cheers...

Brad

This proves that eye contact can be moot. I like this a lot, Cam...for the same reasons Brad mentioned. That soft evening glow/hue and the way the giraffe 'pops' also helps. :toast:
