This is the latest entry in the mating game here at the nature preserve. I found this guy all by himself in another part of the preserve but he was moving and probably looking for does. This is the cleanest shot I got. Not the best without a look my way. But you get what you get. Very nice set of antlers and a nice full body being very deep in the chest. I suspect he may be top dog here. Unless a bigger buck shows up which is entirely possible. It's just the beginning of the rut and there are a lot of does here to attract the bucks. You'll notice on the ground, the start of the new growth of grasses. That's all happened in the last week to 10 days from our first rains. The deer will have a much better diet now with the fresh grass and any acorns they can still find. I warmed this up slightly and sharpened for the web. Otherwise it's as shot. Comments and critiques welcomed and appreciated.

Whoa! Looks like the top dog to me. If there is a bigger one, I'd love to see him. Funny how photographers care so much about where the animal is looking, while deer enthusiasts care more about the animal. I suspect there are a lot more deer enthusiasts than deer photographers, so this would be a big hit with the right crowd.

Certainly agree this guy seems to be the top dog so to speak. Nice photo, shows his antlers very well. It would have been nice to have his head turned a bit towards the camera, but then maybe his antlers wouldn't show as well. Thanks for sharing this series with us.

I like the inclusion of the habitat here Peter, that BG is just far and OOF enough for my taste to be adding to the image rather than being distracting. Your self-critique about the buck not looking your way is spot-on and apart from that I have no real suggestions for improvement here.
