ridgetop coyote

I found this coyote this morning and he posed on the far end of my effective distance. I was taken by the unusual lighting opportunity, with the background trees in shade, and him in brighter exposed, but filtered light. The result seems as if the trees were color de-saturated, but this is the actual effect. This is a strong crop, leaving about 35%, but I experimented with re-sampling and converting large enough for a big print, and detail held up amazingly well. Processing is selective sharpening and high pass and a bit of contrast tweak. Your comments and observations are encouraged, but check larger size. D3S, 200-400 @400, f8, 1/500, handheld, ISO 2500.

Love the image for conveying the impression of a colour photo that you have deliberately converted to B&W, but masking out the effect on the coyote and the grass!

I sure understand what attracted you about this scene Lon, that light sure looks sweet and the darker BG makes the subject stand out well. I have no experience shooting snow scenes so don't take my remark too serious, but I would be tempted here to recover a little detail in the whites in the FG.

Superb portrait Lon, looks great for such a large crop and the darker bg works very well to bring out the coyote! :wavey:

A beautiful coyote in great winter scene Lon. It's sharp and the composition is pleasing to view.

Nice seen and captured.

I like the setting and the coyote gave you a nice glance over his shoulder. I agree that the image quality is exceptional for the big crop and high iso. Like Vincent, I would suggest trying to get a little more detail in the snowy foreground. Nice coat on this coyote, ready for winter.

As you mentioned, this almost looks like a selective color image with the snow so desaturated. Ya gotta just love this light and the pose was perfect. Nice image.
