Spot-billed pelican
by Ajit Huilgol
The Spot-billed Pelican is one of 3 species of pelicans found in India. This bird is relatively small compared to the other two (the Dalmatian and the Great White Pelicans), but is still a large bird, at about 5 feet long! The overall grey plumage and the spots on the upper bill are diagnostic. We have large colonies in a sanctuary near Bangalore, India, and the colony sizes have increased in the past few years, to everyone's pleasant surprise. They build large nests and breed around Feb-March.
The species name comes from the Philippines, but they have been extinct in that country since 1960 or so!
