Lines in Zion

I was out for a walk/hike with family and noticed the yellow band of rock against the more common reds on this slope face. Climbed up to get this comp. I really liked the color and lines, even if this wasn't peak "golden hour" light. But the low angled winter light, although admittedly harsh, seemed to make the rocks glow against that cobalt blue sky. The capture and processing wasn't epic by any means, but hope it appears authentic.

Nikon D600, 24-70 1/160 at f11, ISO 200, Hand held.

Lot of energy in the comp Russel and I like the colors and patterns. The dark vegetation at the top draws my eye and I wish it was a little lighter like the top trees on the right. Minor nit for my tastes though.

Very nice colors and lines Russ, and the comp works beautifully. Excellent shot.

Russell,

You're sure making a great case for busting the rules that one can't take good pictures in mid-day light, or at least outside of the "golden hour" as you mention. This has great color and clarity. This has great lines and flow. I even like the opposing diagonal of lines coming up from the bottom.

Well seen and photographed.

Thanks Lon, Pat and John. Lon it occurs to me that the beautiful images posted by the highly skilled photographers on this site demonstrate a much greater commitment to the craft than is available to me right now. I'm relegated to (actually okay with) making pictures while life happens for now. I do admire (and am a tad bit envious) of those who do what they do to be in the right spot at just the right moment. Someday.

Very interesting lines and color in these rocks. The comp leads me around the bend to the far canyon.

Great clarity and detail in the large version and you handled the light nicely. I also like how you used the cross bedding in the comp. Nice scene.

Great use of the bedding planes to add energy and interest to this image. I'm wondering if pulling back the saturation a bit would put even greater emphasis on the lines? Just musing. Nice capture.
