Zion Stars

Canon 5D MRKII, EF14mmL, f3.2, 25sec, ISO 1600.
I was late and running to shoot the stars before the sunrise. This was my first photo that day, and I got the stars and the sunrise.
Why B&W? I am just kind of fed up with the sunrise orange tips of the mountains...and it is stealing some of the beauty from the stars...
What do you think?

This looks looks like it could be a full on nighttime shot with the brightness of the stars and the easy to see foreground. I assume that the brightness of the horizon and the distant cliffs is the sunrise. It seems like you could disguise that, if you wanted to, with some burning in. I like it very much as presented.

I sure would like to at least see it in color. I don't mind the orange-tipped mountains. And I'm thinking that maybe the starry sky would be improved with some deep blues up there.

Raied,

I see you were able to post a larger original size, cool. Next we can work on the 1200px version - of course that's optional, so no biggie.

Nice job with the night/star image and I like the composition which is giving all the emphasis on the night sky, and it works very well.

I might be inclined to like a darker sky - more contrast to really make the stars pop. I also see your point about the sunrise light "stealing" some of the beauty; so clearly the b&w helps again, emphasize the night sky. The down side to the b&w in my opinion, is the tonal range in the landscape is such - well, there isn't much tonal range and so there isn't much to distinguish any of the landscape features, except of course the mountain peaks up against the night sky.

All in all, this is pretty effective.

I like the scene, Raied, and can appreciate why you went with the b/w. To me, the b/w sky is blotchy looking, especially compared to the original.

Thanks Rob for the review. I agree with you that the B&W has some spots on it. I think I overcooked the sky in NIK adjustments. I will run the conversion again, and try to find in which stage these spots start to appear in the sky.

I like the perspective with the stars sort of putting the towers in their place. I prefer the color too. Some nice contrasts going on in that one.
