Another Wildfire

There were 5 wildfires in the Huntsville, Texas area in 2011 that left this once wooded land barren and desolate. On 12.12.12 driving through the area another wildfire had started that was later contained without major damage to an area that looks like a battlefield.

I thought black and white would capture this sad scene best with the sun setting behind the mushroom clouds of smoke.

I think it is a battlefield, Rick. One hesitates to mention terms like "global warming", and especially "science", but things are changing. I hope it's not too late when we wake up to understand what science is telling us

Thanks for caring enough to document this in the environmental photo journalism gallery.

Black and white is appropriate - carbon and ash.

Reminds me of the lyric by Neil Young "What is the color when black is burned?"

Reminds me of the poem The Hollow Men.by TS Elliot.

"The eyes are not here
There are no eyes here
In this valley of dying stars
In this hollow valley
tis broken jaw of our lost kingdoms
In this last of meeting places
We grope together
And avoid speech
Gathered on this beach of the tumid river."

Maybe we need more poets and fewer politicians

I like this contrasty black and white image, gives a real sense of gloom.

I remember the wildfires here in Texas from that year, and how they dominated the news..
Excellent job on capturing the desolation in its aftermath..
I especially like the 'mushroom clouds of smoke' in the distance, adding to the overall impact.
Well done Rick :wavey:
