Giant Butterbur Leaf

The leaves truly do justice to the name Giant - end to end they are about 2 feet or more. Healthy leaves are completely green in color and this one shows it in decay stage.

ND300s, AFD200mm F/4 Micronikkor @F/22, 1/4 Sec, ISO400, Mirror Lock-Up and Tripod. Some repair done to remove spots and such.

Thanks a lot for your comments on Autumn and let me know what you think of this one.

Love the bold pattern Ram and I'm not sure whether I like the figure or the ground best - assuming I've identified the correct one. Excellent textural detail as well. Striking image.

Pat, Assuming I understood your comment correctly, what you are seeing is the whole leaf. The brown portion shows the decay while green is still the healthy portion of the leaf (would also decay in a day or two).

Ram: If it wasn't for that little corner of green in the LRC I would have to rate this AAA+ but you'll have to settle for AAA. Looks like some green skeletal hand. Well seen and superbly captured and composed. >=))>

This is super neat! I love the way the green pops out of the brown & the mild undulation of the leaf...with subtle highlights...the DOF is great! I am sure you were able to see every spot on your sensor at f22!

I like the colors diagonals, and, as illustrated by your conversation with Pat, that it has kind of a gestalt aspect in that the mind can either perceive it as a green leaf with nibbled edges lying on a brown background, or as what it actually is, a single leaf with gradual deterioration proceeding to the main veins.

Ram,

If I view this purely as an abstract then I tend to initially see the green as the subject pattern and the brown as the ground. However, I think that's because humans tend to be more attentive to green than other colors and because it's brighter. The brown makes an equally compelling subject though. I enjoy images where the subject and ground are reversible for me - (John's point about Gestalt) (Much of Escher's work has this property as well.)

Hi Ram, this is a very cool, interesting, and unusual semi-abstract. I like it a lot. Kudos for seeing and capturing it. I like the green/brown interplay discussed by Pat, and the "skeleton" hand imagery noted by Bill. My only very minor nit is the glare or whitetish areas along the left edge near the top and at the very bottom. Very minor. The rest is nice and sharp and saturated.

Love the detail...that little piece of green in the corner is no big problem and can be easily fixed. Could be seen as a little extension of the "hand", kind of creepy if you think about it... but I still like it.

Perfectly composed, Ram, with marvellous textures. Love the gnawed effect of the wandering edges of the green areas - you've got a real sense of change and decay

Interesting pattern and colors. It reminds me of folding fan.
Happy New Year!
