Creek icicles

by Carolyn Derstine

Gallery: Macro & Close-upPosted February 2, 2013171 views14 comments
We finally had cold enough weather that I was able to find some ice forming on our creek. Many of these kinds of icicles were hanging from the stems of creekside plants. The bottom part of the icicle is what rests in the water and keeps increasing in size with the ebb and flow of the water. Reflections of trees along the creek are reflected in these bottom sections.

Canon Rebel T1i. 180mm macro lens. F/5.6 for 1/60 sec. ISO 100. Tripod mounted, natural lighting.

Carolyn, I wish you hadn't posted this. My plan tomorrow was to stay warm and not even leave the house. Now, I am motivated to venture out in the cold and look for ice sculptures in the local park. I happen to think these formations are really cool captures. I got some like this last year but without the nice reflections you got here. I like your dof for the ice and bg. A cool capture, and well done.

These are terrific, with the bright reflections in the bottoms the interesting parts up top. They look like like dancers. The bright "skirts" look a bit soft, were they in the water?

Looks fantastic Carolyn, a must see large so one can really appreciate its 'uniqueness'.
And everything's better in threes too

Oh my, this is amazing, dazzling, and so beautiful! I can't imagine how it could be any better. The composition and contrast are captivating, and the details draw me closer and hold my attention. I bet this would look fantastic printed on metallic paper or on one of the prints on an aluminum sheet.

Beautiful, Carolyn. The colors are great, and I like all of the bubbles seen within the ice. I love attempting to captures these scenes, but you did an amazing job on this one.
