Waiting out the Storm

I took this picture in Southern Wisconsin last year during a rather bad snowstorm. It is of a red bellied woodpecker that I have named Charlie and who has hung out with us on the farm for several years. I have learned from comments to my prior posts that it is better to have your subject somewhat off center but in trying to do so I couldn't find anything that I liked better so decided to post it as is. I appreciate the many comments I received on my prior post "Splash of Color" and invite any and all comments on this image too. Thank you.

Love the lonliness and cold this portrays. I think a crop from the left would make it even better.

Good winter bird scape. I agree with the crop on the left, the large burned out area is a distraction IMHO. Thanks for sharing.

a nice stormy scene, Beth. In general, like you say, having your subject off center is preferable, and generally with more room on the side of the frame that it is "looking into." In this case, that would suggest a crop from the right, not the left, IMO, perhaps trimming off the right-most trunk and leaving the next one to frame the shot on the right. Posting your techs (shutter speed, ISO, aperture, camera/lens, and crop amount) can help people offer more thorough critiques.

I like this shot and your other one--the small bit of color in a stormy and largely monochrome scene is a nice effect.

Red works well amidst winter & like the way the snow echose the birds back feathers. Wonder if might be enhanced with a closer crop, esp cut bright left side with blown highlights.
