After the Storm
by Nick Bristol
I made this picture just as one of our recent snow storms was coming to an end. I headed out for Long Lake which is only about a mile south of my home. While hiking around I spotted these trees covered in snow with the lake and other shore (a long narrow lake) in the background and thought I had found my picture.
Thanks much for all of your comments on my last post and any thoughts on this one. 5D3, 70-300L @85mm, iso 400, f/11 and 1/40 sec.

Bill, Thanks! We have been getting some pretty nice snows this winter which has been great for photography. Hope you get some too! Nick

What a wonderful winter and tree image. I think you've done a great job with the processing here. Aside from that great snow covered tree, what I think also works well is the tonal range in the snow at the bottom, front to back. I little gray up front, almost like the tree is casting a diffused shadow, then there's the darker gray beneath the tree (water/slush?) and then the snow gets brighter and more white beyond the tree. I think this makes a big difference and much better to view than having all the snow the same tone and featureless. Well done all the way around.

Lon, Yes, the warmer weather we had before the storm had softened the ice on this narrow lake which made for some nice contrast with the snow. So I just tried to include it where it looked good in the composition. Glad it worked!
Michael, Well, I hope you do get some snow so you can get out in it. Again, Thanks Guys! Nick

Peter, The silence was wonderful. Yiming, yes, just a touch of orton effect. Nick

Morris, Yes, it is different for me I guess. I'm not usually a fan of the orton effect but I think if it is a small amount it can work to the advantage of the image in some cases. I'm going to try a couple of larger prints and see if it works on paper like it does on the monitor. Here the b/w conversion and a bit of orton seemed to work and still look natural to me. If anything I felt it captured the mood of the winter storm even better. Glad you liked it.
