Portage Morning II

This image was made a few minutes before the previously posted image (ie. it is not a crop), the camera set up for vertical format and using a longer lens, the intent being to focus more on the ice feathers and the stream of light on the ice. Several comments on the previous image had suggested a vertical crop so thought I would see what folks thought about this rendition. A little more fog hung in the air above the icebergs. Again, in processing this scan, I tried to maximize detail in the backlit ice feathers which was a challenge with Velvia's contrast. Appreciate your thoughts on this image and any suggestions you may have for improvement.
4x5, 210mm, Velvia, 81C filter. M1 scan, Tony Kuyper's luminosity masks and others.

Large size image posted.

Thanks and thanks again for all the comments on the previous image.

Vance, Guess you already had the shot some were suggesting from your last post, and it is fantastic! I really enjoyed the other one as well but might even prefer this one now! The reflected golden light looks so nice with the blue tones and of course just love the feathers look. Only thing I might wish for would be just a bit more room above the top peak, but that is a very minor thing. This is Beautiful!! :toast:

You found a spectacular scene and justified it's beauty with great skill. No comparison they are both works of art.

I like the tighter comp of this version Vance. It really showcases those fine feathered ice patterns and gorgeous light. I like this better than you last post which was also gorgeous.

Vance, This is outstanding and I think I like it better than the first. The light is so delicious and the texture not only in the ice feathers, but also in the background among the icebergs is very alluring. Very well done all the way around!

I like the first one a lot! But, the warmer light, and tighter comp putting the eyes on the best parts of the scene wins out. So I guess I like this one a lotter!

Stunning! Very skilled capture of a fascinating subject. I could stand to have a little more room at the top, but that's just nit picking.

This is really interesting, Vance. I've never seen anything like this at Portage. The ice feathers are incredible, and I like the whole image. :toast: The big version really show those feathers off to their best.

Vance, there are those times where Velvia can shock us and it makes the hard contrast scenes without giving up on one end or the other. This is exactly one of those cases. The transition from the extreme contrast with the highlights in the FG feathered ice and the more distant shadow areas is excellent. Heck, the composition was really there as long as the exposure held up. Very impressive capture.

p.s. gotta love those 210mm lenses too.

When I first saw this image I thought of an etching on gold, and that thought along with further viewing has me thinking of pathway to the heavens. Very intriguing, Vance.

Love the vertical comp for this Vance. I too would wish for a little more room on top, but that's minor for me as well. Those ice feathers look like gold leaf! Excellent overall.

Delicious Light Vance. I would like just a touch more space between the top of the berg and the edge of the frame but very nice anyway and my attention is always drawn back to the feathers of ice.
