Utah Juniper

I came across this ancient Utah Juniper tree on a hike through the Fiery Furnace section of Arches National Park. The tree was nice in itself, but the shaft of light added another element to the composition. Canon 5d Mark iii, 70-200mm lens, 1/60 sec at f8, ISO 200, handheld

Thomas, I see this is your 6th post on the site, so, welcome if I've not commented on any of your previous images to date.

It's always nice to see images from this area of Utah. With 5 national parks it's hard to beat the area for somewhat easy access to a vast variety of sandstone formations and many truly aged & unique trees as well.

I like your idea here but find the time of day is pretty harsh lighting overall, especially in the mid area on the right side. Also the tree was captured with the limbs and top cropped. Not sure if that was your intent at the time or during post processing, but if the tree was not the entire subject maybe a wider shot or even in much closer on the tree structure alone might have worked a bit better. Just a few thoughts on this image. Love that coral colored sand surrounding the base of the tree.

Look forward to more posts and your comments on others work as well.

Interesting image that shows the character of these trees. I don't mind the bright highlights in the foreground, but I do find the bright highlights in the background along the upper right hand side of the frame to be distracting as they draw my eye away from the subject.
