Northern Goshawk

This immature Goshawk was hunting for squirrels when I spotted him, he wasn't too lucky. an adult Goshawk was following it as if coaching it. It just perched some 30 feet from the youngster.

Full frame, at 1/800s, f/6.7, ISO 800 with 600mm f/4 on D3X.

Terrific! What were the circumstances for this image? Where was it taken?

Image was taken close to my house some 35 miles north of Montreal Qc. I participate in the feederwatch program with Bird Studies Canada and keep track of birds at my winter feeder, of course the feeder attracts squirrels and mice, turkeys and deer and I sometimes get a visit from different raptors, lately a Barred owl spent two days close by, it was chasing squirrels.. The Goshawk spends the winter in the area and there is certainly a nest nearby as we often see the adults, they will also feed on deer carcases in the winter. Thanks for your interest and comment.

Good work getting this close to this famously spooky species. It's a first year bird, but I'm very surprised an adult is still supporting it. The ye and head look just a tad soft; perhaps a bit of selective sharpening?

Lovely shot of a beautiful raptor. The grey background gives it a wintery feeling.

Elegant and majestic looking bird. Seems to be staring at a blob of sensor dust though.

Wonderful pose perch and subject matter Claude! The white speckles are a little distracting (snow off a branch above the bird?) Gorgeous bird!
