Weston Beach, in Pt.Lobos State Park, can occupy a whole day just shooting the swirls in the rocks. It was overcast on this day, which is perfect for taking photos.

Canon 5d,3 at IS0 200, 24mm, f/11, 1/40 sec.

Comments and critiques welcome. Thanks in advance.

Whimsical things can certainly be found in the rocks by the sea. I did a double take when I saw this. I have photographed rocks that look exactly like this at Shore Acres State Park in Oregon. You brought home a nice slice of the rock.

Kathy: This is well seen and an especially interesting comp for me. The fact that you shot this as a horizontal while the flow of the rock is vertical intrigues me. For whatever reason I comp a clear majority of my shots in a vertical orientation and suspect that I would certainly have done so here. The patterns are indeed fascinating and alluring. IMO this is really good photography. >=))>

Beautiful color to offset the grey rock. I like the slight diagonal to the rock and the split of the image from the layers on the left to the swirled patterns on the right, nicely seen.

Wonderful entry, Kathy. I really like the shadings of the neutral earthy colors and all the wonderful lines and texture in this image. Your lighting also helps lend a feeling of depth. I like the addition of the few little pebbles in the center too. A very nice composition you found of these amazing rocks. Well done.

Cathy, really nice capture! Aren't geologic processes beautiful? Nicely abstract, could almost be liquid, as it once was million of years ago I'm sure. The oranges and grays complement each other nicely, and I think your choice of a horizontal format works well with the lines. The little pebbles in the center add some interest too. Thanks for sharing.

Great collection of colors and swirls. The overcast really lets the details in the rock shine. Well seen.
