These are finally back at their nesting areas and fill the air with their whistling call.
Cropped to about 50% of original.
1/60s, f/7.1, ISO 800. 600mm +TC 1.7x on D300.

I have never seen this bird although from pictures it has fascinated me since childhood. You didn't mention the conditions, but from your settings it appears to have been low light conditions. To my eye, it is a tad soft, which I would attribute to your shutter speed and the 50% crop. I do like this image.

A great bird - lovely plumage. Pose and perch are nice as well. Regarding the sharpness please see Ralph. Nice catch nevertheless ! Cheers, Hans

I t was a rainy day and the color temp. was bluish and the bird's back and head were wet which may make the blacks look a little soft. Thanks for your comment Ralph.

Claude, a good looking bird well captured with good perch and complementary background. Unfortunately the image lacks sharpness, due no doubt to the combination of focal length and shutter speed. But you gotta take 'em when you see 'em.

Claude,
I agree with others regarding the softness, undoubtedly caused by by the combination of convertor, crop and extremely low shutter speed.
I hope you have both distance and light on your side next time

I would leave off that 1.7X TC on the 600mm. I think that your sharpness will benefit. Otherwise a beauty of a bird and a great bird giving you the perfect pose.

I think tou are right Charlie, the TC 1.7+600mm and D300 don't seem to get along well, of course the 1/60s SS doesn't help either. I had same problem with the Purple Finch. Thanks for the tip.
