Any collection of rock shots should, I'm thinking, include the Grand Canyon. The multitude of colors, textures, and designs is just amazing. Though most of this week's submissions appear to be closeups, or intimate photos, I'm hoping this grand scenic still qualifies. This shot was taken in April 2012 at sunset from Mohave Point on the south rim. I did some slight cropping, sharpened, and darkened the highlights somewhat in PSE. Canon SX30, ISO 80, f/7.1, 1/20, tripod -mounted using timer, focal length 152mm zoom. Comments and suggestions always welcome and thanks for viewing.

I like the strong contrasts in the light, Jim - handled nicely I think. The strata in the upper half of the image show up really well, set off by the massive forms below - a good composition.

Beautiful colors and texture in this big rock. I like the strong light and shadow.

Boy, talk about rock art. . .the Grand Canyon definitely has plenty of that! It was never specified that the postings needed to be close-ups but rather frame-filling and your image is certainly filled with amazing rock art. So yes it qualifies. Your photo shows just a tiny portion of this awesome place but shows it well. The sunset lighting helps to highlight the textures and colors in the rocks plus helps show depth. Certainly is a fine grand scenic shot.
