Almost Light + Repost

Ever since visiting this location the first time last January, I have returned numerous times in hopes that the skies would explode with color. This particular evening (from earlier this spring) seemed to be like the night it would happen. Dramatic clouds swarmed over the mountains as rain began to fall and the winds viciously picked up. The turbulent skies got me excited and I knew that there would be an amazing sunset. After searching around for compositions, I noticed the western horizon clearing up. This was a good thing as it guaranteed the light would break through the clouds above. About 10-15 minutes prior to sunset, the clouds had disappeared over the peaks I was hoping to photograph with dramatic light. I took a few shots as the final clouds made their way over and to the east where they put on a spectacular show of color, just in the wrong direction. Looking back at the images from this folder, this image had became my favorite of the bunch, even after getting my fix of color (re: "Prickly Pink Peralta"). I have been fixated on reworking this image over and over and think I may have finally gotten the processing to my preferences. Any suggestions on improving this are greatly appreciated.

I love it. Maybe not as dramatic as you had hoped for, but I really like the more subtle lighting. Might look better on walls as well :)

Have a darker exposure that maybe you could tame the highlights a bit with?

This has all the feel of a painting to me Peter. I like it as is.

Gorgeous Peter really nice honey coloured light. The only thing that i am not quite so keen on is the polarised blue of the sky where uneven polarisation has occurred in the top right corner I might be tempted to brighten and saturate this corner to make it more like the left hand side. The cacti are really superb.

Excellent image Peter. My only comment is that the sky feels off to me. The left edge is very bright, I think if you could work the color from the top/right into the left portion of the sky it would really make this image pop.

Ian mentioned the uneven polarization, but other than that, very nice Peter. Classic comp with great detail front to back.

Peter - the left sky looks a bit hot, especially the lower cloud area. Maybe another exposure you could blend in here, or process the raw for this area specifically? The cactus glow looks great.

Excellent perspective and love the warm earth tones against the blue sky. I would agree with Ian's comment about the upper right corner. Otherwise, processing looks pretty dang good to me.

Like the way the directional lighting on the peaks is mirrored by the subtle directional glow of the cactus. Nicely composed.

I love the comp and the warm light. The left sky looks a bit or bright to me. What I love most here is the glow on the cactus.

Thanks for the suggestions, here is a repost with the brighter sky toned down.

Wonderful light and the spines on the cholla catch it in some really nice ways. The sandstone spires are beautifully captured as well. Great image

This is really nice. I like the update you made to the brightness of the sky. Was going to be my suggestion. I also agree with the note about the half-polarized thing going on in the sky.

The repost looks pretty good to me, Peter. Even though you did not get the spectacular sky you wanted the warm glow here is beautiful in it's own right.

Peter,

Beautiful light throughout and the repost works very well. You've really managed some beauties from this area and those peaks, well, sure make for a gorgeous backdrop. Love the cholla too. Beautifully captured top to bottom.

Excellent capture, Peter. I think with a few more luminosity tweaks in the sky this will be even better :toast:
