Piton Solitude
by Harry Lichtman
During a recent stop-over in St. Lucia, I had the opportunity to see the iconic Pitons under some really nice lighting conditions. Most views of the Pitons have obstructed views of either trees or the nearby town of Soufriere so I was happy to find this small secluded volcanic black sand beach to hang out on. The closer Petit Piton rises 2,461 ft. out of the sea while the distant Gros Piton is 2,619 ft. An impressive sight.

14 commentsThis is a unique take on the Pitons! As you said, most views are from opposing hill views with trees in the foreground. All of my shots are like that and I found them sorta' boring. This, I like.
What's underwater at St Lucia is the inverse of what you see above water. The bottom drops away as quickly as the land goes skyward. Great take on an iconic location...
I saw my first "green flash" from the bar at Anse Chastanet not far from this location.

I almost want to say this is a 2-image scene, foreground/background, but somehow the play together perfectly. The shadow to sun transition is in your favor and I think this is an excellent near-far capture. Indeed the haze is apparent, but it actually helps tell the story of the place and the conditions. I would almost say this looks "Jurassic." ;-)
Nicely captured.
