The young poppy is just bloomed and shows petals as crumpled paper.

D700, Nikkor 200mm macro, f/22 and ISO 560

Thanks for your opinions and advices.

Congrats on a bold shot! The red is handled well with edges a bit aglow. The center radiating out both in the pinwheel and pollen stems is so clean and in great condition. Your timing to catch this shows patience and deliberation. Well processed. W/o the stem and some leaves, this may seem over-processed to some favoring a natural look. As a pure piece of art to hang on the wall...it is a winner.

Beautiful, Gigi. I love the subtle shades of red and the details of the center.

Gigi:

This is a gorgeous image of a pristine bloom. :toast:

The only minor suggestion is perhaps a more squarish frame.. need to see it to decide.

Ken has expressed a doubt I had till a second before posting and that I still have: without leaves the image is more simple and clean, the flower is enhanced; with, is more natural. There is a version with some leaves of the poppy (a stem was almost impossible for that angle) and now I post it with a question: which do you prefer? Thanks for the help.

First, this is a work of art either way, Gigi, with a superb play of light and shade over the petals. Adding the leaf details leaves this still somewhat abstract, giving a little more texture though, which I do like.

Your work is always very creative and your style has always leaned toward the artistic rather than the documentary. So, I would have to say the first one because it is in line with your style. And, it is a piece of art. :toast:

Beautiful Gigi! Great bold color and well captured. I agree with what Gary said about a square comp.

The Poppy is just as red as can be! The pristine condition of the bloom and your portrait create a graphic impact. I usually favor seeing some stem or something which anchors the flower to the Earth, but I know it's not possible with this perspective. Still very enjoyable as is.

P.S. Now I see the repost and other comments, I'll add that I like the square comp (even a little tighter would increase the artistic appeal and the quality of abstraction), and the 1st version. That way, it's an object of art and the creation is even more "artistic" than when you began. And I have to reiterate that finding a poppy in this condition is just exceptional. All together an amazing image, which I grow fonder of by the second. Bravo!

Gigi:

Without reservation, I think the 2nd holds more interest for me with the bg leaves. The criss-cross lines of the leaves are also abstract looking and support the flower. Also with the leaves, the rim of the glow around the flower is not so evident and also the frame looks just right (rather than 'empty' in the first where a square frame may be more suitable).

BTW there is some smudge artifact in the LLC in version 2.

I do believe I prefer the second Gigi. The bloom is just wonderful, and I like the soft lines in the BG of the second.
