Vermilion Flycatcher

My favourite Flycatcher made this native Southern California Yucca whipplei flower (Hesperoyucca whipplei) one of its perches. This perch is quite tall (8 ft) and I was amazed that it could pick up such small insects on the ground, sometimes quite far away. Shot this in early May in Indian Wells CA. Setting sunlight was filtered by a large tree not fully leaved.

1DX, 600mm + 1.4X, ISO 800, 1/2000 @ f10.

Great shot, K.C.! The wingspread looks wonderful as does the mouthful of insect(s). Beautifully captured-- great timing.

Sweet shot KC - perch, pose and prey against a superb BG. Nice job handling those reds, which can be tougher than whites sometimes. Love it!

Beautiful work, especially catching the otstretched wings AND the bird's dinner in its mouth!

I like the outstretched wings, the bug in the mouth and really nice exposure on the reds Kwan. The tiniest little nit for me, is I find myself wishing for just a little more room on the top and right. but it still works very well.

Lovely image Kwan! The only thing is that I'd tone down the perch a tad,
