Beaver supper

We got a good look at this busy beaver as he/she was cruising up and down the Lamar River in Yellowstone one evening. Roots were the entree of choice, held be its tiny hands.

Canon 5dM3, ISO3200, 400mm, f/5.6, 1/3200 sec. Hand held.

Thanks in advance for any comments or critiques.

Kathy, there was some nice light to work with and a cooperative subject, that's for sure. It's not too often that we can get these guys this far out of the water! I like the rich brown tones in this shot, as well as the catch light in the eye.

My main recommendation next time is to monitor your shutter speed with this subject. With a beaver, 1/3200th is probably much faster than you need in most situations, so you could have dropped your ISO down considerably to improve the image quality a bit (though the 5DIII handles high ISO very well, you could've still reduced the noise a bit shooting at 400 or 800 here).

I agree with Max that the high iso has impacted on image quality. Compositionally, would suggest a less centered subject and a bit lower point of view. It's great when you can capture them out of the water like this feeding or working.

Really nice catch - they are rarely in the clear like this.
Nice detail and light, too -
