High key Sapsucker

A Red-naped Sapsucker bringing a meal to the kids at Rocky Mountain Natl Park.

After shooting some generic poses I got to experimenting with high key shots and other techniques as this model was very cooperative (having chosen a nest facing a parking pullout 20 feet away).

1/2000 f/5.6 ISO 3200, D600, 80-400mm @250mm

Interesting, John. The oof trees behind the woodpecker really don't do that much for me, but it's a neat experiment.

I don't mind the high key, but the OOF tree is so dominant that I can't get to the subject.

Unusual composition, that works quite well for me; helps to break some rules now and then. The high key is excellent.

An interesting approach, but the out of focus, bright trees on the left seem like to great a distraction.
