Overcast Beauty

Gallery: FloraPosted July 19, 2013193 views9 comments
Hi, as an infrequent visitor to the Flora gallery (my apologies), I debated putting this in M&N. But I think the stars of the shot are the flowers, so hopefully it fits here.

I often do photo shoots for a popular regional magazine, and one assignment took me to this beautiful home. The sky was overcast, but not "boring". The woman whose home is here, not only did all of the flowers and garden herself, but also hand-laid the stonework for the walkway. Quite a beautiful, serene place. D90, ISO-400, 1/640th, f-9.0, 18mm in manual. Larger version posted, thank you for your thoughts!!

You captured her work beautifully. There is a lot to admire, and I think the clouds/tree anchor the scene nicely. I'm not a techno photo geek... I just try to respond to what I see. And I had a warm and soothing response to this photo.

Nice light to show off this beautiful private garden, Bill. Lots of close-up photo ops in this scene.

Bill - Sure fits here. Wonderful front to back DOF and the several varieties of flowers make it a very pleasing scene !. Well captured.

This is a very pleasing wide angle view of this huge garden. It comes across as an impressive work of art thanks to the way you portrayed it. Not easy to compose an image of such an expansive garden, so I really like the way you handled it. On the nitty side, the part of blown out sky is a little hard on the eyes in contrast to the serenity of the landscape.

Thank you all for the comments! Much appreciated. Catherine, I don't think your point out the sky is a "nit". I totally agree with you. After posting it here is when I really noticed (why does that happen??!! lol). I thought of a crop, but then I'd have to deal with only part of the large tree. I should have worked on toning it down anyway. Thanks again!

I think Bill Fach used to say "If it grows, it goes!"
Beautiful garden scene, Bill. As you already noted, the blown out part of the sky is a bit distracting but that can probably be fixed to some extent via a crop or more processing. Your composition is very solid and shows both the beautiful hand laid stones plus the showy garden. I'm sure this looks lovely on the magazine page and gardeners will certainly appreciate it.

That looks like a pretty enjoyable stroll around her place. Beautiful plantings, and planned so well. And, your comp shows it off very well, too. Nicely done.
