The Expanse

This is a photograph of sunrise over the Salar de Uyuni salt flats in Bolivia. Salt flats are 80km across. The horizon you can see was about 50km from where I was shooting and peaks are reaching over 6000m. I have been to this area twice but I had only one day to photograph and I brought only a few good photos. The area is amazing and has a lot of opportunities for great photographs. I'm definitely going back.
Two photos blended for DOF (30s f/11) and one additional for sky (2.5s f/11) ISO 400 taken with D800 and 14-24 @ 14mm no filters (I wish I had some ND's with me). It was still very dark on the ground when I was shooting and I had to use headlamp for better focusing. Comments and critiques appreciated. If you have any question about the area you are welcome to contact me.

Dig it. On my list of places to go too. Gotta love that expanse. Would love to see this place after a bit of water :)

Very proper title. Nice take on a proven classic shot. The rock in the corner is icing on the (salt) cake.

Must be sweet printed large!

Thanks for sharing, Artur! :toast:

I find this most appealing in its simplicity. Wonderful colors in the sky

The title fits the image. I like the feeling of wide open space and the rock in the foreground is just enough to add interest.

Artur,

Welcome to NPN and the Landscape Gallery! You first post was phenomenal - I need to go back and leave a comment. This one is wonderful too. Of course there are a few salt flats around, but this one works very well. I especially like the rock in the near foreground to break up the patterns and static comp a little bit. A little dark, but quite suitable for the time of day and mood. Well done.

We look forward to more images and for your participation in the galleries and forums.

Thank you for all the comments and suggestions. Bolivia's Altiplano with Salar de Uyuni is phenomenal. It is a place well worth visiting. Salt flats themselves have unlimited photo opportunities. The structure of salt on the ground is different and can be anything from perfectly shaped hexagons to chaotic crystals. After rain parts of salt flat are covered with water creating perfect reflection where horizon can't be recognized.
I agree that first post is a little dark. It was dark when I was shooting and I could see stars on the other side of the horizon. Here is second lighter version. What do you think?
