Night Mantis + Repost

This is a shot of the most popular tree at Crater Lake. It looks like a Praying Mantis from this angle in my eyes.

Any feedback is more than welcome! :wavey:

Canon 6D
Canon 16-35II @ 16mm
Panoramic stitch with focus stacking.
Edited in Photoshop CC

EDIT! I posted a redo at the bottom of the comments. I would super appreciate some feedback on the newer version! Thanks guys! :wavey:

I think it's pretty difficult to get something unique from this tree. I see it quite a bit from here, but some look better than others. What I like here is the arching milky way that seems to sprout from the tree. The exposure seems spot on and the shadows aren't too dark (for the exception of some branches in the tree). I'm sure the composition possibilities here are very limited, but the right side where the tree overlaps the island and lake itself just seems too busy. I feel like there needs to be some separation there, but again, I'm sure there aren't many options for composition with this tree. Other than that, I find it pleasing.

I feel like the positioning of the tree compromises the view towards Wizard Island as well as the best part of the Milky Way. Not much that can be done about this except of a different composition, but this of course is entirely subjective and I stress it is only my opinion. I usually simply prefer better separation between the main elements and for me at Crater Lake those are usually sky, Island and whatever you compliment those with.

I like the exposure as well in this. It seems natural to the lighting present. And, I like the concept here with the Milky Way being tied into the tree and with it's arc in the sky. But, for me, the tree is too centered and it merges too much with the island and horizon on the right side. I also would like to see the rest of the Milky Way as it's almost like a waterfall that has been cut off at it's destination. Your work on the night sky is excellent, and maybe you could share some of your technique and pp work?

Thanks for the feedback! I have other compositions of this tree which offer better separation, but they don't show off the nice curves and intensity of the tree.

This was more of an attempt to get something unique instead of something perfect, if that makes sense?

I might try making the lake darker, as it isn't really the point of interest and will make the tree stand out more.

Thanks for looking!

Morris, I would have to write up a 10 page article to detail all of the crazy methods I needed to come up with to trick the software into doing what I need it to do with nighttime pano stitches that are also focus stacked. In fact, I will have a bunch of tutorials on my techniques written up this fall and winter when I have some time. :toast:

Here's a very quick re-edit! It would have taken hours to get a perfectly done re-edit, but I thought I would see what you guys think of this one first.

Thanks again for the expert feedback from such a large group of talented photographers. It's very valuable to get such feedback other than the constant "Nice shot!" 500PX stuff.

Very beautiful image that has a lot of impact and drama, Johan. I love the way you have portrayed the night sky and the the many-storied tree is well presented with the Wizard island revealed beneath a branch. Well done. :toast: Chet

I agree with Marc on this one Johan. There is simply just not enough distinction or separation between FG and BG elements. For me this creates a bit of a visual knot or fixation where the lower right hand part of the tree meets the island. As I have never been here I can't suggest a different approach.

Thanks for sharing.

Well, this is a 'Nice shot!'.
Still, I have to agree with the others in that the tree is more of an obstacle than a complement. I keep wanting to see the lake and the island, but my view is blocked.
In that regard, your repost looks much better as the tree itself is the focal point. The (very) muted light on the tree looks great (I'm no fan of light painting)!

I remember your comment on the 'starscape' capabilities of the 16-35 lens, and I agree completely. That's why I picked up a Rokinon/Samyang/Bower 14mm f2.8 lens that is simply a stellar lens for the price! More info. here if you're interested.

P.S. If you add '+repost' or some such to your title, you may get more views.

Good advice. Thanks!

This is the only angle you can get to bring out the sweet curves of the tree. Either you get a crap looking tree and a good background or a great looking tree and a crap background. I hate situations like that, and this result is for sure not from a lack of trying every angle there is.

It's different, and that's what matters most to me. Crater lake and Wizard Island shots are a dime a dozen, eh?

The night sky and scene are very nice but the composition leaves a bit to be desired as already noted. Sometimes being different for the sake of being different is not a good enough reason...
