Pondering Raven
by Roger Kirchen
Common Raven (Corvus corax) photographed in Mount Robson Provincial Park, BC, on our way back from our summer vacation.
The bird seemed mildly annoyed that we had selected a picnic table near some food morsels it had been scavenging. It seemed to ponder whether to approach and claim its food or whether to wait until we were gone. Eventually, it hopped away, only to return a few moments later. These are very smart birds. I like the pose, the subdued colors in the feathers and the partly open bill. In fact, I like Ravens and I rarely pass up a shot.
The bird was perched on a slightly tilted picnic table and the table's edge cut off the feet - no chance to get a full bird.
Canon 7D, Sigma 150-500 at 500 mm, f/7.1, ISO 640, 1/160 sec, monopod (sitting on the ground), PP in LR5, CS-CC and NIK. Minor crop.
All comments are much appreciated. Thanks for looking.
Thank you for your comments on my previous photos and for the WP for "Bending over backwards". Note that I was away from NPN for about 6 weeks. Roger.

5 commentsRoger you proved me wrong, the number of time I was tempted to photograph Raven and stopped thinking their just to dark and I would never get a good photo. NIce shot.

Keith.
This is a wonderful shot and you have given many of us permission to take shots of very dark birds. I think "we" have a bias toward "whole bird" shots, but I am particularly fond of head shots of interesting subjects that are well done. Couple that with your interesting story, and you have a real winner. Kudos!
This one here has more brow/reddish than I have seen in the past. Usually, there is a bit more blue. I don't know if it's the light or the plumage. I tend to think that it's the plumage.
