Painted Hills

by Marylynne Diggs

I took several photographs at the Painted Hills National Monument earlier this month. It was very smokey out there (mostly from fires in SW Oregon), so I went long and abstract. Here is one of my two favorites.

Canon 7D with 100-400mm at 330mm
ISO 10, f/9, 1/320s

Feedback and suggestions always welcome.

Marylynne,

This is lovely. Everything about it works very well, and the softer, warm light due to the smoke really accentuates the colors.

Well done!

It's easy to see why this is favorite Marylynne. Beautiful color and texture, and very nice composition.

Beautiful colors Marylynne. Both this one and your second on PNWNP are excellent abstracts from here. Well done! :toast:

Images from this area always look so inviting. This is no exception, Marylynne. I like the softness of the scene as a result of the color combination, the rolling lines of the terrain, as well as the composition from this POV. Very nicely captured image.

The thumbnail doesn't do it justice. This one looks really great in large format!

The lines and colors work very well. I played with a scroll crop of the bottom, but prefer it as you've shown

Very well done. Have the fires been contained?

Thanks, everyone. I have another I'll share in a day or so. I also played with more crop off the bottom, but it was hard to find a place that didn't cut the black mineral washes in half. Cropping to the very top of the black marks in the left corner leaves the ones on the right fully revealed, but there is a balance achieved by having the black marks on both the left and the right, I think. There is also something inviting about the soft curve of hill reaching out toward the viewer, and cropping the bottom cuts that curve.

The SW Oregon fires remain a problem. This is one of my favorite sites: http://www.nwccweb.us/information/firemap.aspx . It has a map, and if you click on the upper left Fire Information Summary, you get a textual description of the incidents, size of fire, percent contained, manpower working it. I'm geeky this way. I also have an app with that info for when I'm on the road  I'm sure Ashland is still discouraging people from outdoor exercise. Air quality has been poor.

Nice looking abstract, Marylynne. One thing I noticed in the larger version is that some areas appear to be out of focus, not sure if this is from web compression or a result of the focal length. Nicely seen.

Thanks, Zack. I thought so too. I get mixed results from the 100-400mm even on a tripod (decent but not pro-level tripod) and I think the trombone zoom has to be really tightened down for the photos to be crisp....or I need to set back focus or front focus. At f/9, there should be no diffraction, and I used a remote trigger. I like to say its the 7D so I can justify a 5DMiii, but I think my copy of the lens is not the best out there. I'll check with sharpening. I had an NR setting in the sharpening settings that my be defeating all purposes.
