Out in the early am today at the nature area to greet the sun on a nice summer morning. This young buck literally walked up to me and begged to have a portrait taken. Who am I to turn him down. Got 2 shots and he moved on. I thought with the BG and subject that a square image looked pretty good to me (cropped to 60%). Does it to you? I certainly got a good catchlight in his eye. Looks like the sun to me just at the tree line. I cloned out a stray twig and warmed this up slightly before resizing and sharpening. Comments and critiques are most welcomed and appreciated.

This portrait has a lot going for it Peter, I particularly like the colors and tones throughout, they are earthy and attractive. Nice even light as well, not too bright. Love the little fuzzy spikes. You asked if the square crop works, honestly for me it does not in this instance. It's just that I would prefer more of a rectangular frame to give her some space to look into on the left. I do feel that the composition choice is truly yours, whatever looks best to you really and meets you artistic objectives. My opinion, is just that, an opinion.

Oh, have another opinion; I would suggest a bit more work on that cloned area, looks a bit rough. Generally the "Spot healing" brush is a better choice, especially for a background like that - have you tried it?

Thanks, Gary. I have lot of canvas to the left to add back in to give the buck some room. As to the cloning, I wasn't that happy with it and definitely see your concern there. I did you the brush but am rather new to using it. Guess I'll have to go back to a tutorial and review the use of it. Your comments are appreciated.
