Just Resting
by Peter Cross
Took a trip to Pt. Reyes National Seashore yesterday with a fellow photographer and spouses. While the gals opted to geocache, we wanted to go back and get some photos of a group of elk we saw on the way to Drake's Beach. Pt. Reyes has a herd of captive Tule elk (a CA endemic race of the elk)that is on a large point that is fenced (many 1000's of acres)to keep them there. Over time a few have escaped and started a couple of other small herds. These are with one of those herds. This looks like the bachelors club with 2 mature bulls, a smaller bull, and 2 very young bulls with spikes on the ridge but further to the left, looking like they'd like to join but keeping a safe distance away. Across the road behind us was a large group of cows (25-30). Looks like they are keeping to themselves for now but this should change shortly with the rut. This is my first time working with elk and the habitat is way different than that with the deer I normally shoot. This is the first of what will probably be a short series of these guys. For this image I cropped about 30% from all sides but mostly bottom and right. I boosted the temp a bit for warmth and removed a few fence posts in the BG. Comments and critiques are most welcome and appreciated. Thanks in advance for your thoughts.
