The Test of Time

Massive Coastal Redwoods of Northern California, and the lush forest floor beneath them. I left this distorted on purpose. Partially because I can't correct it without loosing too much off the edges. And partially because I kind of like it this way. Hope you do too!

Still buried with work mostly, and some other stuff. Getting tired of living out of a motel.

Thanks,
Chris

Muir Woods? I love to visit the trees up there. I like this a lot except for the distortion but that is a personal preference as you mentioned.

Thanks, Eva!

This is actually Jed Smith near Crescent City. " The Boyscout Tree Trail" to be exact. I might see about correcting the distortion some.

Perfect exposure and color.
The distortion ruins this for me. Not natural and not artistic.
I am surprised you have this much distortion at 24 MM.
You shouldn't if you pointed the lens straight.

Hey Dan,

Thanks. I level the camera, so not sure why it looks so distorted. It seems worse on the left though.

My thoughts on the distortion: if the scene is as commanding as this one, distortion is a minute consideration. I am happy with this just as it is. To say it is not natural is true; but to say it is not artistic is a judgement I would not care to make!

Very nice Chris! Sure hope I can make it to the Redwoods one of these days and see this for myself. Good work!

Feels big and majestic. Great job Chris. I would be tempted to go a little more saturated. Maybe graduated somewhat from top down.

I like the distortion too, especially the tree in the ULC. Because it is so tilted and the one on the right is not so much, I wonder if the camera was actually tilted. Symmetrical tilt of the trees would make a nice frame here maybe.

comp works well for me, though I'd prefer a bit less distortion on the lhs trees
the mood is just wonderful, love the texture of those trees

Beautiful image Chris and I don't mind the distortion. Nice tones and color and the mist looks great adding lots of mood. Well done.

Chris,

I like composition a lot, and the light is wonderful. Given what you are trying to portray here, the distortion doesn't bother me a great deal. When you're confronted with a situation like this one, you might consider framing the scene with idea of straightening it later.

Unless one has a tilt-shift lens or a view camera, dealing with vertical convergence is a challenge. I think you did well, here.

Really nice redwood image. I personally like the "leaning in" sense, sort of adds a bit of tension.

To me these are the toughest scenes to capture right, that being deep forests. This is an excellent example of a fine capture of this type of scene. Very nicely done, Chris.

I love the redwood shots. This one is done very well, the colors are spot on and the mist really adds atmosphere.

This is sweet, Chris. The color and light look fantastic and the distortion of the verticals works well here. Just last week I saw the Nat Geo piece on Mike Nichols' project photographing an entire tree from base to crown. I have to get out there some day to walk among the giants.

An incredible image, Chris. For me, the distortion seems to emphasize the vast immensity of these trees. A real stunner in my opinion.

Thanks David,

You know it really is quite an experience to walk among the Redwoods. You go through a range of emotions and sensations. Mostly though, it is humbling.

I have the same desire to see the Cypress Swamps around your neck of the woods.
