On my way to photograph some hummingbirds in Savegre, at the Talamanca Mountains in Costa Rica, saw this beautiful old tree, with bits of life trying to grow here and there

I find that most of the interest in this image is on the right side. Correspondingly, I would suggest that a 4x4 or vertical 4x5 crop would stand on its own as a much more appealing composition.

That is one gnarly tree! I do like the addition of the small branches on the right and the textures in the center section are great. I could see cropping some of the out-of-focus parts on the left.

Ok being the general opinion in agreement, I will comply, have to say you are right
thanks a lot for your comment,
I was so moved when I first saw this tree, and still am, that felt petty to crop it, but again you are right.
do keep on your comments and help me improve

What a fascinating old tree! Lots of interesting elements with the moss, ferns, knotholes, and the gray patina of the wood. I do like your cropped image better. However, a less severe crop, such as just cropping into where the sky was not visible on the left, would also have worked well IMO. Very nice find that works great for our challenge.

The cropped version works well.

By the way, and I should have said this the first time, welcome to NPN!
