Cold Eyes

Shot this inside a snowcave in the Broken Top area. Marc led us down there on a workshop I attended while on my trip to oregon. They are pretty awesome to be inside. I was standing around waiting for some of the other peeps on the workshop to finish up a shot, when I just started messing around with this comp, and I think it's one of the more interesting comps I came away with. Interested to hear your thoughts.

It was a run n gun type of situation... the spray from the water was really bad, so I had to place the camera... click, click, click, without looking, pull the camera up, review, dry off the lens, and then try again. My brand new 14-24 was getting drenched. It had me a little nervous.

Excellent Ted. Your shutter speed is dead on for the flow. Yeah, I'd be a little nervous too if my lens was getting soaked.

Amazing, like the cool tones and the flow. The upper portion is kind of noisy. Other than that there's no nit from me.

These ice cave shots always remind me of some sort of alien cave. I like your take here with the in your face cascade and how the lines counteract with each other. It seems a little right heavy with that large rock, but I don't think you could have had the flow of said lines working so well together if you were another step over. Great work Ted.

Looks like it was worth the spray.... the image is quite surreal with the ice dome and the water shooting straight at the camera before dropping off. Well executed

The lines and movement, both of the water and the icy ceiling of the cave, are out of this world amazing. Fantastic work.

Nice creative photo.
I would clone out the black spots on the "roof", and run a bit of noise reduction.

This turned out great, so worth the little bit of the lens soaking. I am glad the lens turned out safe. Cool image!

Really unique, Ted. I know how tough this must have been to get and process too. Totally awesome work!

Love the comp here Ted; glad you had to stand around and wait. Perfect processing as well. (I'm the opposite. I keep hoping to have an accident with my old gear, so I can return home with a tale of woe and the need to replace! )

Thanks everyone! I appreciate the suggestions. I know the image is quite noisy, I actually had to increase the exposure of this shot by 4 stops in RAW! Because of the wet situation, I had to shoot quick, with a high aperture so I could do it all in one shot. The shots ended up being very underexposed. I'm actually really impressed I was able to increase the exposure this much and still have a usable image. Thanks to the d600! I will do some work with the noise and see if I can get rid of some of it.

Peter, I hear ya on the right heavy. I agree, it is. But, not sure there was anything I could have done about it!

Marc, thanks for showing us this place!

I think you have a unique take on a what's becoming a familiar scene here. The bowed lines from top down and bottom's up leading to the outside makes for a fine eye driving comp. The water spray adds a sense of time, and the light and toning are appropriately cool. Excellent work.
