Forest Whispers

Early morning in the Elbe Sandstone mountains in the south-east of Germany.

I found processing this shot rather tricky and would welcome any feedback on the processing (does it look natural?) as well as the composition (do you find it too complex?).

Please view large.

Thanks,
Karsten

Karsten, Sure looks natural to me and it's beautiful! I really, really like the light and think your comp works just fine. Some wonderful autumn color makes this very inviting. The clouds and fog also added a lot to the scene. Like it a lot and it looks like an awesome place.

I fully agree with Nick. The contrast-rich PP works well here. A softer look would not work with these rocks. It makes the scene a bit surreal but I like it.

Lovely! You did well to tease some detail from the shadows with this dynamic range. I can only think that a bit more foreground in the photo with no lightness or fog would form the anchor of colors and contrast...then each transition away towards the horizon shows increased muting by fog in air...ending with a bit more on top in the blue sky and clouds. As is, this is superb in color and contrast.

Karsten - I find the processing very natural on an uncalibrated monitor, so I'm sure it would look realllly good on a calibrated one. Lots of textures mixed in this, but the alternating light - dark areas make it work for the eye and brain. Trees - rock - trees - very simple. The shadows look a bit warm or yellow, so I might bias these area to a cooler tone and see how it looks. A blacks color adjustment would be an easy way to see the result. Beautiful area. :toast:

I like this a lot, Karsten. This is an intriguing landscape with wonderful light and color.

I can see how this would have been difficult to process but I agree that it looks believably natural.

The way the light explodes in from the left is magnificent. What a beautiful gorge, and the points of color are a sweet touch.

The lighting looks very natural, but your pp adds an artistic feel to the scene. Beautiful shot.

Yes, this must definitely be viewed large. Then it looks wonderful, natural, and very inviting. I'd say you got the processing right.

Quite a spectacular view. Really like your processing as it looks very natural. I think the print size would look great in those shadowy areas in the midground.

Wow... just now saw this and I think that this in large print would cause me to want to sit in front of it all day to admire its every detail. Complexity works very well for me in this pic. Great job. :toast:
