Ancient Sea Beds

These pictures of rock formations around Nashville, Tennessee are striking examples of ancient sea beds uplifted through plate tectonics. They occur throughout Tennessee and much of Eastern North America.

The many layers of Calcium Carbonate have been laid down as sedimentary rocks that date from the Ordovician period over 480 million years ago. These rocks contain extensive fossils of ancient fishes that represent the ancestors of all later land vertebrates.

Interesting image. Good info, I wonder how many people go past this type of rock formation without thinking about what it really is? Wish there was some way you could have incorporated a fossil in the photo. Thanks for sharing.

I assumed it was a man made structure. Interesting.

Love this Sandy- interesting that it outcrops at the surface in TN as I often see it from well cuttings from 6000' in this part of TX

Other than the deposits of fossils, these tell the story of eons of change of the surface and subsurface of the Earth. Yet they are only a thin slice of a story!
