Battle for the Den

This was one of the wildest encounters I've had in some time. In late May a pair of red foxes built a den near a picnic area in Yellowstone's Northern Range. The family attracted a lot of attention over several days, as both parents and their two kits were easily visible throughout the day.

I happened to be playing tour guide for my mother on this day, and we arrived at the den site just as some dramatic action was unfolding. A young badger was making its way toward the den and the vixen was doing her best to fight it off. Despite her best efforts (it was a pretty vicious battle), the badger made it inside. The kits escaped out another hole.

This was the peak of the action. We were all stationed somewhat far away (park rangers had cordoned off the area closest to the den), so this is already a bit of a crop. I chose not to crop tighter in this case due to the loss of detail, but also because this at least shows the turf the combatants are fighting over.

The story did not end well for the foxes. Though the kits escaped this initial barrage, the adult foxes chose to dig a new den hole right up the hill. A day later, the badger emerged from the old den and, while the foxes weren't looking, went straight into the new den. The kits weren't so lucky the second time around.

:frown: Very interesting story and photo. sad for the kits, as the badger won the war. I wish you'd posted a larger version, so I could see this dramatic scene up close. How amazing to have had the opportunity to see the "circle of life" up close! :wavey: Great shot!!!
You could crop the tree almost to the den and make this confrontation look even more "personal".

Nice capture. This looks familiar. Have you posted this before?

Richard, I posted a link to a recap of the incident in the forum a few months back. Recently I decided to try and rework a couple of the images to post here in the gallery. In the previous version you saw this was likely a much tighter crop. I didn't think the quality of that image met "NPN standards," so I wanted to try it with a different crop here.

The story was published in a few papers/websites as well, so you may have seen the image elsewhere.

Your choice of crop shows the interaction very well Max. Nice image quality, at this size for sure anyway. Tight crops not always required or even desirable sometimes. Life is tough!

A great photo Max. This was amazing action to witness. I had the privilege of witnessing it too. I think the female fox ended up exhausted.

Nice catch! Very unique image Max, don't recall ever seeing a badger/fox interaction photo before. Roosevelt picnic area?

Guy, the Yellowstone Picnic Area (probably the one you're thinking of), a short ways NE of Roosevelt.

Thanks for sharing this Max; great wildlife drama. Although the wish for a detailed view of the action is mostly there with action shots I do like the fact that you have included what the fight was about; the den (and its contents...).
