Bridge to the Universe

This photo was taken after midnight near my camp at the edge of the Warren Glacier. I was hiking the glacier at night, looking for composition. The moon was out illuminating this frozen landscape. I walked down into one of the crevasses and I found this amazing icicles hanging down from the glacier. The longest icicle was about 60cm. It was very difficult to set may tripod on the steep wall of ice. I was able to secure camera using ice axe to take a few shots.
Three shots blend for DOF and one for the sky.
Please see large or go to http://500px.com/photo/51553164 for dark background.
Enjoy :toast:

I like this A LOT, Artur. Very creative star shot. I have one suggestion--the sky looks a tiny bit 'off'. I think using selective color or just plain contrast, you can deepen the dark portion of the sky a bit so the stars shine better. There is a hint of green in the sky that just doesn't seem to mesh with the billions of stars here. But it's a great shot for sure! :toast:
OH--BTW, please use the [url] tag so that we don't have to copy your link. Im not sure why you linked it anyways cause this version looks better than the 500 pix one

The overhanging ice is a great foreground element. The density of stars is overwhelming.

Nothing short of extraordinary!!!!! An image like this, aside from the quality of the photograph itself due to your compositional skills, is all the more special considering your effort to achieve it. Well done!

Wonderful star shot Artur. I like the composition a lot with the hanging icicles positioned beautifully. Great job.

Great comp, Artur! :toast:

The sky is a little on the monochromatic side, but I think it works.

Thank you all.
I know that the Milky Way is not as colourful and doesn't pop as much. The moon was out and it was way to bright to get the look some of you are talking about. For this reason it was very difficult to get all the colours out of Milky Way. Here is another version with some colours and different sharpening technique to avoid colour shifting.

OK--i rarely do this but im gonna revise my original statement cause i really love this shot but i culdn't figure out what was bugging me about it--Johan tipped me off with is 'monochromatic' comment. I think the sky color is fine, especially in the repost. The poblem for me is the amount of stars--i don't think ive even see the Hubble show that many of them--looks like someone spilled salt on the photo. I think a few brighter stars would have been more effective than the lots of almost imperceptible ones here. The forground to me is very realistic, despite the brightness (could be moon, could be a light/headlamp) so the salty look of the sky kind of clashes with that for me. Everyone is gonna have there own take on this, of course, which is perfectly fine. I'm sure you gave the 'look' of the sky here plenty of thought--it's your vision that counts, im just givin you my reaction to it. Keep posting, i look forward to more from you!
