Split Rock Lighthouse stands on a rock that juts into Lake Superior along its north shore. Since Minnesota is situated in the middle of the North American content, and far from any ocean, many Minnesotans flock to the north shore and the numerous inland lakes each summer.

This image was reframed to 16:9 to remove extraneous rocks from the FG. Some of the whitecaps and bright rocks have been burned in.

Comments and critiques are welcome.

Equipment: Pentax K-5 with DA 55-300mm at 55mm, tripod

Exposure: 1/800 sec, f/5.6, iso 100

It's a fine mid-day look at this light house. I like the many shades of blue in the water and sky. The splashes look good. I'm not sure about the foregrounds rocks and wonder if seeing either more or less of them would be an improvement. That's a judgement call that I can't make it without jumping back and forth between the versions.

I like how the lighthouse, the blues and the splash of the wave compete for ones attention, lovely photo, I'll have to put this lighthouse in my list to visit. If I may suggest, I would crop just a little bit the lower part, to give more relevance to the wave, but as Mark just said, one has to jump from one to the other to decide.
Beautiful photo

Hi Mark and Alberto.

Here is a new version of the image, with more rocks in the foreground. My opinion is that they don't enhance the scene, but please let me know what you think.

Nice one Randy. I like how you have included the other buildings at Split Rock. It does appear just a bit soft. Maybe a slower shutter speed would have given you a smaller aperture and greater DOF. Thanks for sharing.

Good point about the DOF, John. A smaller aperture probably would have helped. Also, I am trying to get into the habit of turning off the Pentax camera's shake reduction feature when it's mounted on a tripod. Pentax shake reduction is built into the camera, and moves the sensor. As I understand it, when the feature is turned on, and the camera is on the tripod, the sensor will move to try to improve the image, but actually cause blur.
