Mountain Goat and Kid

This mountain goat and kid were members of a large flock that grazed near the peak of Mount Evans when we visited there in Summer 2012. I wish that the goats weren't only backlit.

Please comment and critique.

Location: Peak of Mount Evans, Colorado, USA

Date and Time: August 8, 2012 at 17:57

Equipment: Pentax K-5, Pentax DA 18-55 WR at 55mm

Exposure: 1/320s, f/5.6, iso 100

Crop: None

Post processing with Lightroom 5: Extensive burning of white spots on rocks and fur fringes on goats. Darkening of sky to bring out details and color.

Randy, you did well for a backlit situation. Mt. Evans is a great place to go. Thanks for sharing.

Nice shot. I like that you have included a good amount of the natural habitat. I think the image works well, but good lighting is always a plus.

Nice composition Randy, I like the rocky outcrops and the way the kid is looking in mom's direction. Kind of wish mom had lifted her head for you, I think it would enhance the feel of this one. If you were to print this one might suggest darkening the light triangular patch at the lower edge of the frame.

Great job of handling the light & shadow, like this setting too.
Both nicely in focus, and it's well composed Randy :toast:

I agree this is a pleasing composition and it shows the animals as part of their natural environment, yet provides a close view. If the nanny offered a non-feeding pose, I think it would be more interesting for most viewers, but this does elicit a gentle pastoral mood.

Thanks or the nice comments, everyone. I will darken the whitish triangular granite piece near the lower-right corner if I choose to print this photo.

Also, I have many photos of the mountain goats on that August day. Maybe I can find one with the heads risen.
