Birch and Maple

I came across this birch log and maple leaf while on a hike with my wife and another couple that are good friends. We were looking for a remote cabin in the Hiawatha National Forest of Upper MI. I just took my Canon G11 along because I wasn't really thinking about making any new images on that hike. Thought if I found something I wanted to photograph I would go back later with my gear. I enjoyed the look of this little scene so just thought I would at least capture it with my G11 and see how it came out. I was kind of pleased with it after looking at it later. The red maple leaf was here on the log just waiting for me, so no, I didn't have to put it there or even change anything. This was the comp I liked best out of just a couple of shots I made before moving on. Thanks for any thoughts.

Gorgeous find Nick. I really enjoy intimate scenes like this especially the contrasts of the red maple leaf against the birch log..

I really like the cripness of this intimate scene, Nick. Great details and the splash of warm color with the maple leaf is superb. This turned out beautifully for not having your regular gear.

Pretty, Nick! I like the contrasts here. I might have moved it a bit to cover more of the dark area, but this looks fine as is. :wavey:

I'd say you have a pretty good little hiking camera if you can make images like this. :toast:

What a nice find Nick, really like the natural color, and your composition couldn't be better. It's always nice to leave the big stuff home once and a while and carry light, I find my self doing it alot lately. Beautifully seen and presented.

The dramatic contrasts in color is everything here, Nick. Almost looks like a manipulated PS image of de-saturation of all but the leaf. Nature sure has away of providing us with some of the neatest takes that require very little PS work at all, this is a fine example of that somewhat unique look.

Beautiful Nick. I love the texture of the birch bark and how the vibrant reds contrast with the subtle bark. The little G11 does a great job.

Hi Nick,

This is a nice composite. The brilliant red is complemented by the green moss and contrast well with the log. Well done.

This is a very nice, intimate image, Nick. You might look at bringing down the bright area above and right of the leaf. The detail and color is excellent.
