Pied-billed Grebe
by Dennis Plank
Another from Ridgefield NWR last month. I never did see whether this Grebe was able to down the fish it had caught. It swam all over the place with it for at least 5 minutes while I watched before it went out of sight. It had the head of the fish in its mouth for awhile, but this was actually a later frame in the series. Unfortunately, it never got too close and you're restricted to the vehicle in this part of Ridgefield, so this is a substantial crop.
7D, 500mm f4 ISL + 1.4TC, beanbag on truck window, f8, 1/2000, Av mode with no compensation, iso500. Cropped to 3.24MP (just about enough for this kind of presentation). Taken at Ridgefield NWR at 11:05 am on November 21st.
Your comments and criticisms are most appreciated.
Thanks for looking,

7 commentsLove the water with the brown streaks, and great little grebe.
Seems a little awkward in the frame - perhaps placing the bird on the left side looking into more space on the right would help.
Very nice image!

Looks pretty good in spite of the hefty crop..
I just want to see the one where the little guy gets that sucker down
