Shasta County, Ca
Cold and windy this morning, so no fall water color or reflections. She did capture and consume several nice sunfish. This one may be a crappie? 7D, 500/F4+1.4, 1/1600, F8, ISO 400, -0.33 EC, tripod, Thanks for any suggestions, Dave

Hello David

Sweet Catch !! Love these little Guys. They are a Joy to watch & Great entertainment when there is more than one giving Interactions. Their soft throaty sounds used to communicate are also a pleasure.

Thinking Quite High Contrast and Reflection on the fur capture. Maybe the Time of Day? Not sure about your Crop but eyes and area seem a little soft? Maybe Not enough Pixels?
if you had room, It seems Quite Centered both horizontally and vertically...Would have liked some tail to balance off ...
Nice eye contact

pleasing Image.. well done..

Bill

David,
This seems on my monitor at least to have not much detail, is it a large crop?
I also think the contrast is too much and toning it down a little may help.

Hi David. So nice of this guy to pose for you on the little chain of rocks with the fish. I like this one perhaps even more that the first post, the fish is more visible and presented with its eye looking out at us. Also, I like the direct eye contact with catchlight from the otter. With the strong contrasty lighting I can imagine this might be a tough one to get just right in processing, wish I was better at it myself to give some pro advice. I really like the sheen on the coat from the way the light strikes it there, the left side of the face seems slightly hard-edged though. I'm ok with the centered composition personally, the rocks give a nice diagonal that make it all work. (This is definitely NOT a "Crappie" photo... Sorry, couldn't resist)

Hi David,

Nice shot - the fish in the mouth and the direct eye contact give this one some nice appeal. I personally like the blue/brown combination in wildlife photos, so I'm not missing the fall colours. As others have noted, the image does appear a bit soft overall...not sure of the source of this, but you're using a lot of focal length here and even with high shutter speeds meticulous "long lens technique" can make the difference...

On the compositional end, for me this one's a tad too centred. I'd personally prefer less foreground and if this is a crop and you have more room above, I'd cut foreground out and add a little more on top.

Cheers...

Brad

The warm light and direct stare pose (as if claiming possession of the crappie) makes this an engaging capture, IMO. The slicked fur makes for tricky processing and I think you did a good job with it.
