Squirrel Grooming

I have a lot of large oak trees on my property and a rather large population of squirrels inhabiting the area. I love to practice my skills by shooting them and ocassionally come up with a gem. I was in my house, heard some squirrel sounds emanating from the backyard, and when I went to investigate, I found these two chasing each other around. I decided to get my camera, and was rewarded by a series of shots, this one being an example. I have never seen squirrels relating in this close a manner - just romping around with each other. Another shot I have in this series shows the bottom squirrel with his eyes almost completely shut as if just absolutely enjoying this experience. It was tough deciding which to post, but I went with the one with eyes open.

The photo was shot with a Canon 70D and Canon 100-400 L lens at 170mm.

Nice shot. Good eye contact on both squirrels. Well done.

Thanks Jerry - two of my favorite kind of shots are ones with creatures interrelating, and ones making eye contact with me!

Sandy, this is a sweet capture which elicits an emotional response. Clearly this is in the shade of the understory, offering mostly flat lighting. I think you might add some pop to the image with more contrast and sharpening on just the two squirrels. Getting good eye reflections on both is a super element.

Thanks Lon, I might play with it - I shot a nice series of them, but with very shady lighting and at 400mm, it didn't have that pop. I'll play with it soon. Thanks.
