Landing at my house

We are fortunate in Florida in that we have daily, close contact with a lot of wildlife. I have considered doing a photo book of just the wildlife I have photographed on my own property. This particular Great Egret has formed an attachment to me. When he sees me arriving home after a cycling workout, he swoops in from seemingly nowhere, and follows me around. He will even walk in, and hang around the inside of my garage if I am there. I just love this guy and I have often photographed him as he follows me around. I have some great portraits and other shots. Recently, I happened to have my camera with me in the from and he came swooping down and I captured a series of shots of him coming in for a landing. I decided to display this particular full-frame shot of him.

The shot was made with a Canon 70D with Canon 100 f2.8L Macro lens, f3.5, 1/800, 100mm and IS) 100.

The mailbox might be a slight distraction, but even though I could rid the shot of it with PP, I like to minimize that when possible and cropping would not have worked. The difficult thing was making a choice of shots in that I have him in some interesting wing configurations, but I decided to go with full wing spread. I am always amazed that such a thin bird, can be so spectacular when it spreads its wings!

It is amazing how easily these birds become habituated in a suburban setting. They are not exactly road warriors, either. Many are unfortunately killed by autos and trucks. They are beautiful in flight, though and this one is no exception. Full frontal is not my favorite pose, but this one is nice. :toast:

Phil, they are amazing. I used to live on a lake and there was a great blue heron that lived in my back yard and just added so much to the atmosphere. This guy is a regular here. I have a lot better shots of him, but just wanted to show him making his arrival in his full glory!

Brilliant snapshot, superb light and clarity. More space on both sides would be excellent. Well done Sandy.

Thanks Miro, I cropped it that way to fill up the frame with the bird's wings but your point is well taken now that I look at it!
