Loggerhead Shrike

The bg will be busy for most, but this is the first bird I encountered at the Bosque del Apache refuge! I was quite shocked to arrive in New Mexico, the Chihauhaun Desert, no less, and find snow my first 2 days there! I was too excited about going to the refuge, I didn't care about the roads! I noticed a spot in the bush where he was ensconced, and was happy to find a shrike...we don't have them here in PA.

50D, 700mm, ISO 320, F32???, 1/40 LARGER version also provided. Thanks for you comment/critiques! Sharon

Superb job pulling it off with those shooting parameters, Sharon. I've had many occasions of odd camera settings myself-usually without this happy an ending! The twiggy bg doesn't bother me a bit.

I like the busy bg, especially since the small aperture got most of it in focus.

This works just fine for me. I've seen shrikes (including Northern) on every visit to the Bosque, and snow on a few of them as well.

Love this! Sweet , sharp bird in it's normal habitat.Really nice detail and pose.
