Reina, New Snow & Sunset

I was hiking on Thompson Pass with the dogs right after the first snow of the season. It had snowed about 8 inches then rained for a bit and then cooled off and froze everything again. The result was a light, glazed crust on the snow which you could hear when you walked but not stiff enough to make it difficult on the dog's legs. The dogs didn't want to head home and neither did I but it was starting to get dark and we had a ways to go. I paused at this little pond long enough to capture Reina enjoying the sunset. It was pretty dark when we got back to the truck though.

Sony DSC-R1, ISO-160, f8.0, 1/30 hand held (good thing I wasn't shivering!)

Please view the large version. It has much greater presence.

Very nice Gary. The scene looks really cold (but I suspect it's not as cold as it looks). Great landscape scene, beautiful colors to look at, and a nicely placed dog to add to it. The sky and it's color is what drew me most to this. Very nice.

Excellent landscape photo Gary, the skylight is beautiful and the contrast against foreground snow covered area perfect. I like to see the dog in foreground, adding nice life to the scene and creating well balanced composition. :toast:

Beautiful sky, Gary, and a lovely, simple composition with very delicate shifts in tone across the snow. The dog is placed just right in the frame - very nice image !!

Very nice scene you've captured here Gary. The bluish cast on the snow blends well with the warm tones in the sky and creates a very relaxing scene while the presence of the dog in the foreground kind of anchors everything. The alert stance of your dog looking looking off into the distance adds a bit of drama to the scene as well. Gives me the feeling that something is lurking just outside of the frame and that the tranquility of the moment may soon be broken.

Love the combination of cool and warm colors in this image, Gary! Lighting looks just right on the snow for the light in the sky. Great sky with interesting foreground details too. The dog adds a wonderful touch. My one minor thought is that I wish there was just a bit more space between the dog and the bottom of the picture, but I do like his pose and the direction of his focus. Your dogs are lucky to be able to go on such adventures with their master.

The color in the sky is very nice, Gary, and it makes a great contrast with the cold blues in the snow. Your dog is well trained to stand in a great spot for the comp.
