The Crystal River

Winter comes to the Crystal River. I wound up here after driving through the night over Independence Pass in a snowstorm so I could be at the Maroon Bells at daybreak, only to find the gates closed. So I made a quick decision to drive over to Marble and over McClure pass. I stopped and made this image of the Crystal River along the way.

A very pleasing early winter scene with nice colors and a good composition, Michael. I'm not a big fan of the soft silky water because it doesn't fit the ruggedness of the scene and I know it doesn't really look anything like that but that's strictly a personal preference. A very good shot, overall!

When I look at a photo like this, I think how would I approach this. I think I would have probably done much the same. It would be nice to know the technicals to see if that was true.

Michael, I like this image a lot, it has kind of a painterly quality to it with the rich colors combined with the long exposure for the running water. My only suggestion would be to draw some of the saturation out of the sky and lighten it up a some. This image is predominated by mid tones and I think the foreground and mountain in the back would really stand out more if there was greater separation from the sky.

I like the stormy and wintry look to this image, Michael. Nice comp with the rocks framing the river which leads the viewers' eyes to the snow-dusted pine trees and on to the distant mountain. I also like the random glimpses of yellow color in the vegetation and the smoothly flowing stream. My one thought would be to crop down to the top of the little leaning pine tree on the right cliff. This would crop out quite a bit of the uninteresting sky and help concentrate focus on the rest of the scene.

This is neat with the touches of color scattered through the landscape and the flow of water pulling my eyes into the distance. I too think that the expanse of nearly uniform sky isn't helping. You might be able to process that for some more contrast to add interest or try Carolyn's crop suggestion.
