Wasn't really expecting much of a sunrise on this particular morning but I'm glad I set up and waited. This was taken along the lower reaches of Soda Butte Creek, in Yellowstone. I came back later that same day to photograph the creek at sunset but the ice in the foreground had been washed away, making the overall scene much less interesting.

See Larger!

Techs:
11mm @ f/8
6 images blended for DOF
2 additional images to retain detail in the sky

Love the detail on that center ice flow, almost looks like a foriegn language left behind from some past culture. My biggest nit is with the haze or flare center left. The creek pulls the eye directly into it and doesn't really have any strong details to stay there. The color is nice but if were me I might be tempted to give a bit more saturation to accentuate the wam/cold duality.

I like the comp and the great textures of the ice crystals in the foreground. I find I am wanting more density in the sky and mid-ground, too. Looks like there was ground fog or steam from the water? Still it is very well done.

There was definitely a lot of steam coming off the water..I liked the effect so I didn't try messing with it to much..thanks for the feedback guys.

nice image - not sure if the comp is as balanced as I would have liked it!

The ice crystals in the foreground are really the focal point here and then I sorta get lost. There is a significant amount of cyan in the pool on the left and down the left side of the image, sky and in the snow on the peak . Perhaps if that were pulled back some it would change the feel here for me. Something just seems a bit off. I really enjoy seeing images from here knowing the commitment it takes to be there at sunrise. There is a warm/cold duality that is hard to translate. I really enjoy seeing your work, Zak.

The foreground ice is great with all the detailed frost crystals and the soft rounded edge. I also like the gentle colors in the sky. In this case, I don't think having the mist rising off the creek only near the left edge helps because it's such a contrast to the crisp details in the foreground. In looking at this, I wonder how a version cropping out all of the blue in the sky and then subtly blurring the ridge on the right would feel.

I just love the composition with the ice in the foreground. Great details on the ice crystals in the foreground. The sky is a bit boring to me but I think that's how reality looked like but I think if you want to you could get a bit more density in the sky. But I like the picture as is and it's a great capture. Beautiful image

Great comp Zack and the fore ground ice looks really nice. Wonderful detail and feels very natural to me. Great job.

Zach, really beautiful composition. The ice in the middle, then the river leading the eyes to the mountains - great! The foreground is definitely the strongest part of this image. Did you have any issues with the moving water when combining the 6 images for DOF?

Nice from front to back! I've got to find one of these scenes with such nice ice formation.

Wonderful shot. The foreground is particularly interesting and it complements the rest of the scene very nicely.

Bit a of a mixed reaction from the crowd I see. Overall it works pretty well for me. Great foreground subject and details. Perhaps I would have liked more made of the nice light falling onto the peak in the distance, seems pushed to a side a bit too much for me while the less interesting right sided mountains dominate.

Im with the majority here (for a change) I like this overall--that fg ice is killer-but the bg kinda pales in comparison. But i think the bg is a useful compliment to the fg. Cant always get all you want... :wavey:
